If you’re planning a holiday to a remote part of Scotland—think the Highlands, the Isle of Skye, or one of the Outer Hebrides—you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Wild landscapes, dramatic coastlines, and an ever-changing sky make it a dream for nature lovers and anyone wanting a proper escape. But when it comes to packing, knowing what to wear can be a bit of a puzzle. Scottish weather has a mind of its own, and rural areas often mean limited access to shops. So it pays to be prepared.
Here’s your guide to dressing smartly and comfortably for a Scottish getaway.
Layers, layers, layers!
Scottish weather can change in a flash. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s misty with sideways rain. The key to staying comfortable is layering.
We would recommend:
A comfortable base layer - such as a Harbour Top from Joules, like this navy & cream striped version.

Mid-layer - such as a warm fleece or jumper. We love this Barbour Otterburn Gilet as it's lightweight but quilted for warmth.

Outer Layer - a waterproof or windproof jacket with a hood. This Barbour Jayla Waterproof Parka is just the best for keeping the rain off!
Walking Boots
Even if you’re not planning serious hikes, you’ll likely end up walking more than expected—across uneven paths, muddy trails, or damp grass. A sturdy pair of waterproof walking boots or trail shoes is essential. We have to recommend the Grisport brand here of course!
Our top pick for women are these Grisport Lady Lynx Walking Boots.
With a supportive high ankle fitting, and in a vibrant red colour what's not to love!

Comfy Trousers
You can't beat a pair of Brax trousers. Made from soft cotton, they are lightweight and wash really well, and they'll last you forever. Our latest drop is featured below in a very dark navy colour and Mary style.

Cosy Extras
As the weather is so varied in rural Scotland at any time of the year we would also recommend a wooly hat, some gloves and also some suncream and sunglasses as you need to be prepared for anything!
Remote Scotland is rugged, breathtaking, and sometimes wild—but that’s part of its magic. Dress for comfort, be ready for the elements, and you’ll be able to enjoy every second of your adventure without worrying about being cold or wet.
And remember: there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes! We can help you get kitted out for even the most inclement weather, just browse online or pop into our Alnwick store, we'd love to see you!
Much love
